Ik vind dit een erg mooi nummer... (en de stempelset ook). De tekst is zo herkenbaar. We denken zo vaak slecht over onszelf. We brengen onszelf zo snel omlaag in onze gedachten en in ons gevoel. Tenminste, de gevoelens van spijt en niet goed genoeg zijn komen bij mij veel te vaak terug.

I love this song and the stamp set too. The words are so recognizable. How often do we think of ourselves in judgmental ways. Bringing ourselves down with our own thoughts and feelings. At least, for me the feelings of regret and not being good enough are returning way too often.

Dus vandaag heb ik een soort therapeutische pagina gemaakt in mijn art journal. Aan de onder- en bovenkant van de pagina heb ik dingen geschreven die ik niet goed vind aan mezelf en zou willen veranderen. Daarna heb ik het naamplaatje gestempeld in het midden van de pagina en ervoor gekozen om daar het woord 'chosen' in te stempelen. Ik heb daar omheen verschillende andere (positieve) woorden gestempeld uit de set. Dingen die goed zijn om jezelf af en toe aan te herinneren. De andere dingen die ik op had geschreven zijn beter om te vergeten, dus daar heb ik een laag zwarte verf overheen gedaan. De verf heb ik naar boven toe steeds lichter laten worden zodat ik in het midden van de pagina een helder gele kleur kon toevoegen. Omdat ik acryl verf heb gebruikt die een beetje doorzichtig is (behalve het zwart) kun je nog steeds de positieve woorden lezen die in het lichte deel staan.

So today I made a sort of therapeutic page in my journal. At the top and the bottom of the page I wrote down a couple of things that I dislike about myself or that I would like to change. After that I started stamping. I stamped the name tag first and decided to use 'chosen' as the name. I stamped a couple of the other words around the tag to remind me of all the other things I am through God. Saved, beautiful, loved, free. Great things to remember. The other things are better to forget, so I added a black layer of paint on top of it. I blended the black layer out so that I could add some bright yellow in the center of the page. I used acrylic paints so they are a bit translucent (accept for the black color). That way I could still read the 'good words' and the 'bad words' wouldn't be visible anymore.

Blessings for the new year

En toen was het einde van het jaar alweer aangebroken. De laatste Soulful Song van dit jaar. Nu moet ik zeggen dat het niet echt een ‘typische soulful song’ is vandaag. Ik wilde toch iets met het aanstaande nieuwe jaar doen dus dan wordt je keuze al wat beperkter. Veel christelijke ‘happy new years’ (of ‘blessed new year’ in dat geval) kon ik even niet bedenken. Maar als het dan toch over de beste wensen gaat… Dan is ‘Ik wens jou’ natuurlijk wel gepast.

Dit jaar ben ik op vakantie geweest in Ierland en ik vind al de zegenbedes die ze daar hebben zo mooi. Dit liedje komt daar wel bij in de buurt. Ik kan nog hele verhalen gaan schrijven erover, maar misschien is het beter om gewoon te luisteren. Alle beste wensen voor het nieuwe jaar.

Aangezien er een Nederlandse en een Engelse versie van dit nummer is deel ik beide hier maar, de bovenste is de Nederlandse en de onderste Engels.

We reached the end of 2017. The last Soulful Song for this year. It’s not a typical soulful song this time. I wanted to do something with the new year and the choices in christian songs are pretty limited. As far as I know ;). But I wanted to share this song with you that wishes you all that you need.

I visited Ireland this year and I really love their blessings. This song reminds me of these blessings. I can write a lot about this, but maybe it's better to just listen to them. I wish you the best for the new year.

Soulful Songs: Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful

De dag voor Kerst kon het natuurlijk niet missen… vandaag weer een Kerstlied als Soulful Song. En dan zijn er zoveel mooie nummers om uit te kiezen! Omdat de Soulful Songs voor mij toch ook wel met een vorm van aanbidding te maken hebben heb ik gekozen voor ‘Oh, come, all ye faithful’. Dit lied roept ons op om hem te aanbidden en vertelt ook nog een stukje van het Kerstverhaal. Sommige varianten laten wat stukjes weg, de originele versie heeft namelijk nogal wat coupletten. Om het Kerstverhaal er ook in terug te laten komen heb ik gekozen voor deze versie van BYU Vocal Point / BYU Noteworthy, deze laat ook wel wat stukjes weg maar laat wel het stukje van de engelen terugkomen. En ze hebben gewoon een erg mooi filmpje ;).

De tekst die bijna niet terugkomt in de online varianten maar die ik wel erg mooi vind wil ik nog wel even benoemen.

‘True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
Son of the Father, begotten not created’

Een moeilijk stukje om te vertalen, want het Engels ‘begotten’ bevat in deze zin zoveel dat er bijna geen vertaling van te maken is. Persoonlijk zou ik kiezen voor het woord ‘ontvangen’ maar het stukje is ook goed te vertalen met een deel uit de geloofsbelijdenis van Nicea:
Jezus Christus, eniggeboren Zoon van God, vóór alle tijden geboren uit de Vader.
God uit God, Licht uit Licht, ware God uit de ware God.
Geboren, niet geschapen, één in wezen met de Vader, en door wie alles geschapen is.

En om niet te vervallen in een eindeloze stroom van gedachten over mogelijke vertalingen van dit lied wil ik het daar maar bij laten. Want het is sowieso mooi om er even bij stil te staan dat Christus het Licht uit het Eeuwige Licht is. Geen creatie van God maar een deel van God zelf. Iets wat niet te begrijpen is, maar daarom is het ook een geloof. Het Kerstverhaal is eigenlijk te bizar voor woorden, maar juist daardoor iets wat niet te verzinnen is geweest en zeker niet te voorspellen. En voorspellingen van de geboorte van Jezus zijn er genoeg te vinden in de bijbel. Zelfs over deze ongelooflijke gebeurtenissen wist God toen al aan de mensen te vertellen. De profeten wisten al een deel van dit plan en in het Kerstverhaal mochten wij het werkelijkheid zien worden (en natuurlijk loopt dat verhaal nog veel langere tijd door, tot aan Pasen, tot het einde van deze wereld) .

It’s the day before Christmas so a Christmas song couldn’t be missing on the list of ‘Soulful Songs’. And there are a lot of songs to choose from! Because the soulful songs are a part of my worship to God I choose ‘Oh, Come All Ye Faithful’ today. It tells us about worship and a part of the Christmas story. Every artists makes their own decision about the parts that they sing from this song so there are a lot of different versions on the internet. I picked the version from BYU Vocal Point / BYU Noteworthy because they kept a part of the Christmas story in the song. And they make beautiful videos ;).

There’s a part of the song that stood out for me, but isn’t in a lot of performances from this song. But I still wanted to share this part here.

‘True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
Son of the Father, begotten not created’

It’s hard to translate this part in Dutch because ‘begotten’ means so much in this sentence that it’s almost impossible to find a good word to describe it. Well, you read English so you don’t have that problem but I wanted to share something about these words. Christ is the Light from Light Eternal. Not a creation of God, but a part of God. It’s something we just can’t understand, but that’s where faith comes in. It’s something we need to believe, not just for rational reasons that we can explain but because it’s something God tells us. In the old testament there are a lot of predictions about the birth of Jesus. The prophets knew a part of Gods plan and we witnessed the fulfilling of this plan in the birth of Jesus (and the story continues, it doesn’t end here. Easter is an important part of this plan too and of course, this plan is still a work in progress).

Toen ze dat zagen, werden ze vervuld met diepe vreugde (Matteus 2:10)

Ik wilde de ster van de set 'Peace on Earth' voor deze pagina gebruiken. Eerst dacht ik er zelf een stal bij te tekenen, maar toen ik nog eens naar de set zat te kijken leek het me juist wel een mooi idee om de kribbe eronder te zetten in plaats van de stal.

I love the star in the stamp set 'Peace on Earth' so I had to use it for this page. At first I wanted to draw a silhouette of the stable with the star above it but then I thought... Why not use the stamp of baby Jesus instead.

Ik wilde een mooie lucht maken met diverse kleuren dus ik heb ervoor gekozen om pastelkrijt te gebruiken voor de achtergrond. Hierbij kun je de kleuren fijn in elkaar laten overvloeien. Ik heb rood, paars, blauw en een heel klein beetje zwart gebruikt. De achtergrond is opgebouwd uit verschillende lagen om de kleuren intenser te maken. De afbeeldingen heb ik gekleurd met kleurpotlood zodat ik goed alle details kon kleuren.

I wanted to make an intense sky so I used pastels to create the background. I started with the yellow color and added some red, purple and blue colors around it. I used a little bit of black on the edges of my paper. I added a couple of layers to get a more intense color. The images are colored with colored pencils so I could get into all the details.
